Minas is one the largest gemological regions in the world. The state produces the greatest variety of colored gemstones, both in quality and quantity.

Today, Brazil is one of the seven largest producers of colored gemstones, gold and diamonds in the world, and Minas Gerais accounts for more than half of these exports.
